Un bambino amish di 8 anni e sua madre stanno viaggiando a Philadelphia, in visita alla sorella della madre. Mentre aspettano alla stazione ferroviaria, il giovane ragazzo assiste a un brutale omicidio dentro uno dei bagni.

Il detective John Book è incaricato di investigare sull'omicidio dell'uomo, che era un poliziotto sotto copertura.

Poco dopo, Book scopre di essere in grave pericolo quando i colpevoli vengono a sapere della sua indagine e si nasconde nella comunità amish. Lì, impara il modo di vivere tra i locali amish, che consiste in non violenza e agricoltura.

La colonna sonora di Witness - Il testimone riesce a trasmettere anche la bellezza e la serenità della vita nella comunità amish. Le melodie dolci e rilassanti riescono a creare un contrasto interessante con la tensione presente nella trama del film, offrendo momenti di respiro e di riflessione.
