Sinopse

Um menino amish de 8 anos e sua mãe estão viajando para Filadélfia, a caminho de visitar a irmã da mãe. Enquanto esperam na estação de trem, o jovem menino testemunha um assassinato brutal dentro de uma das cabines de banheiro.

O detetive da polícia John Book é designado para investigar o assassinato do homem, que era um policial disfarçado. Pouco tempo depois, Book descobre que está em grande perigo quando os culpados descobrem sobre sua investigação e se esconde na comunidade amish.

Lá, ele aprende o modo de vida entre os locais amish, que consiste em não-violência e agricultura. Book logo inicia um romance com a mãe do menino, mas seu romance é proibido pelos padrões amish.
