Sinopse

En medio de la fiesta de Navidad de ejecutivos corporativos en Nochebuena, el detective de la NYPD John McClane llega directamente desde el aeropuerto a la sede de la Corporación Nakatomi en Los Ángeles para pasar la Navidad con sus dos hijos, su esposa Holly, quien es la exitosa número 2 en la empresa.

Mientras todavía se aman, John nunca apoyó la mudanza de Holly a Los Ángeles, Holly asumiendo su apellido de soltera Gennaro, algo de lo que John no estaba al tanto hasta ahora, y él no quedarse con ellos indica el estado tenso de su matrimonio.

Mientras John solo puede mantenerse desconocido para los asaltantes por un tiempo en un escenario de matar o ser matado, John tiene que esperar que pueda mantenerse un paso adelante de los asaltantes y que no descubran su identidad, especialmente que Holly, uno de los rehenes, es su esposa.
