Sinopse
Chris Taylor é um jovem americano ingênuo que desiste da faculdade e se voluntaria para o combate no Vietnã. Ao chegar, ele rapidamente descobre que sua presença é bastante não essencial e é considerado insignificante para os outros soldados, pois não lutou por tanto tempo quanto o resto deles e sentiu os efeitos do combate. Chris tem dois sargentos não comissionados, o mal-humorado e indestrutível Sargento Robert Barnes e o mais agradável e cooperativo Sargento Elias Grodin.
Uma linha é traçada entre os dois sargentos e um número de homens na tropa quando ocorre um assassinato ilegal durante um ataque a uma vila. Conforme a guerra continua, Chris mesmo se aproxima de um colapso psicológico.
