Synopse
Im Jahr 1865, als der Amerikanische Bürgerkrieg unaufhaltsam seinem Ende entgegengeht, bemüht sich der US-Präsident Abraham Lincoln um die Verabschiedung des wegweisenden Verfassungszusatzes, der die Sklaverei für immer aus den Vereinigten Staaten verbannen wird.
Seine Aufgabe ist jedoch ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit, denn der Frieden könnte jederzeit eintreten, und wenn er eintritt, bevor der Zusatz verabschiedet wird, werden die zurückkehrenden Südstaaten ihn stoppen, bevor er Gesetz werden kann.
Lincoln muss auf fast jede erdenkliche Weise genügend Stimmen von einem widerspenstigen Kongress erhalten, bevor der Frieden eintritt und es zu spät ist.
Dennoch ist der Präsident zerrissen, denn ein früher Frieden würde Tausende von Leben retten.
