Synopsis

At Eternity's Gate is a film that portrays the last two years (1888-1890) in the life of Vincent van Gogh. During this time, he spent most of his time in southern France, particularly in Arles.

Van Gogh is portrayed as being driven by his art and the personal meaning it holds for him, rather than focusing on making money. Despite not selling any of his paintings, he is financially and emotionally supported by his brother, Theo van Gogh.

Compared to his friend Paul Gauguin, who experiences some success, Van Gogh is seen as less contemplative about his work due to his rapid painting style and thick strokes of paint on the canvas. However, he is arguably more contemplative, even though he is incredibly prolific.

This contemplative nature eventually manifests as madness, whether perceived or real, as shown through a well-known incident involving his left ear.
