Synopsis

Bartleby is a short story written by Herman Melville. The story follows the narrator, a successful lawyer, who hires a new employee named Bartleby. At first, Bartleby is a diligent worker, but soon he starts refusing to do any tasks with the phrase "I would prefer not to."

As Bartleby's behavior becomes more and more erratic, the narrator tries to understand and help him, but ultimately fails. Bartleby's refusal to conform to society's expectations leads to his downfall, and he ends up homeless and destitute.

The story explores themes of alienation, isolation, and the dehumanizing effects of modern society. Bartleby's character is a symbol of resistance against the oppressive forces of conformity and capitalism.
