The future star grew up as Archie Leach, the son of a tailor in Bristol, but was traumatized when his parents' marriage broke down, leading to his father leaving for another and the bottle, and his abandoning him entirely to be raised by an aunt. A friend introduced him as a rascal in the music hall, he joined a tour company, and on his first foreign tour he stayed in New York. He slowly worked his way up Broadway as a handsome antagonist, until he was offered a Hollywood contract with Paramount, which proved disappointing enough, but he became a major star, brilliant Hitchcock-like assistant directors who played on his more ordinary past. Several marriages brought him mostly frustration, such as his reconciliation with his mother, whom he put up in an English home, only his daughter became a lifelong relationship.
