Synopsis

Black Mass

In late-1970s Boston, the FBI are looking to break the Mafia's hold on the north of the city. Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) is on the case and willing to go to any lengths to achieve his aims. A South Boston native, he decides to "ally" the FBI with South Boston crime kingpin James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp), as his main enemies are the Mafia.

Approaching Bulger via his brother Billy Bulger (Benedict Cumberbatch), a Massachusetts State Senator, Connolly is successful in gaining Bulger as an informant and ally against the Mafia. However, this alliance only emboldens Bulger in his quest for power and wealth, as he is able to operate with impunity and utter ruthlessness.

Not realizing he is being duped, Connolly finds himself backing Bulger rather than law, order, and justice.

The use of period-appropriate songs in Black Mass adds authenticity to the setting and helps immerse the audience in the time period. The carefully selected tracks complement the narrative and enhance the overall viewing experience.

Paul Taylor

Overall, the soundtrack of Black Mass is a standout element of the film, elevating the storytelling and leaving a lasting impact on the viewer. The music enhances the narrative and brings an extra layer of intensity to an already gripping story.

Matthew Turner
5/10

Overall, the soundtrack of Black Mass is a crucial element in setting the tone and mood of the film. The music not only complements the performances and visuals but also plays a pivotal role in building suspense and heightening the dramatic moments in the story.

Edward Miller
6/10

The soundtrack of Black Mass effectively captures the gritty and intense atmosphere of the crime-ridden streets of 1970s Boston. The dark and brooding musical score enhances the tension throughout the film, creating a sense of unease and suspense.

George Gonzalez
10/10

Each track in the soundtrack enhances the tension and drama of the scenes, adding depth and emotion to the characters' motivations and actions. The music seamlessly blends with the on-screen action, creating a truly immersive experience for the audience.

John Jackson
2/10

The soundtrack for Black Mass left much to be desired in my opinion. The music failed to capture the intense and gritty atmosphere of late-1970s Boston, where the FBI and the Mafia were engaged in a high-stakes battle. Instead of enhancing the tension and drama of the story, the soundtrack felt generic and uninspired.

Matthew Carter
5/10

The contrast between the ominous instrumental pieces and the more upbeat songs in Black Mass creates a dynamic range of emotions for the audience. This mixture of tones adds depth to the storytelling and reflects the complex characters and their motivations.

Joshua Lee
4/10

Furthermore, I found the musical choices in Black Mass to be distracting and out of place. There were moments in the film where the music seemed to clash with the on-screen action, pulling me out of the story rather than immersing me in it. It was disappointing to see such a crucial aspect of the film, like the soundtrack, fall short and detract from the overall viewing experience.

Charles Turner
9/10

The soundtrack of Black Mass perfectly captures the gritty and intense atmosphere of the film. The haunting and suspenseful music sets the tone for the dark and twisted story, keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire movie.
