Marco Altoviti is someone without any particular intellectual or ideological background. His job as an insurance inspector takes him to a different city every day, but in the short space of two weeks his organized life is overturned by a series of events and a number of people. There is Baldini, the insurance officer from Grosseto who could be double dealing with one of their competitors, or Cecchi, the officer from Viareggio who has to face and protect himself from competition from his son. Then there is Bertini from Montecatini who regrets the loss of old values, and Gambacciani from Siena who is more interested in talking about his erotic experiences than insurance policies. Then there is their manager back at head office who offers Marco a "project" for renewal and modernization. Finally, there are the people in Marco's private life who also have a part to play in this mini revolution in Marco's life. The stories which are interwoven are everyday stories in which people are neither totally good or bad, they are full of unexpected twists and progressively lead Marco to a reasonable doubt.
