Best friends since the seventh grade, Molly and Amy will be graduating from high school tomorrow, it the culmination of this phase of their life plan together, namely to focus all their energies on being the proverbial overachievers at the expense of all else, including a social life with their classmates, to get into their respective chosen Ivy League college in the fall, which they have done, Molly going to Yale and Amy going to Columbia. After getting their undergraduate degrees in four years, they both plan to do graduate work together at Georgetown. While Molly, the class president, arguably has had this goal in wanting to be the best, Amy has had a few other items bubbling under the surface. While she is acting on one of her socially conscious items in planning to go to Botswana for the summer to do humanitarian work, she hasn't acted on others, most notably having coming out as lesbian two years ago, she only having told Molly that she'd like her first romantic encounter to be with classmate Ryan, not even knowing if Ryan too is gay. When Molly learns that many of their classmates, who she considers slackers, have also been accepted into prestigious colleges or have lucrative prospects other than college, she feels cheated by her chosen high school life. As such, Molly is able to convince Amy to fit a fun, social high school life into this one night before they graduate, which for Molly means attending the graduation party hosted by Nick, the class vice-president, despite Molly having outward contempt for him in he seemingly able to get by on his good looks, his athleticism as one of the school's jocks, and outgoing nature. Finding out where the party's being held let alone getting there is easier said than done as hidden issues in Molly and Amy's life and friendship come to the surface in the process.
