Boys State is a documentary film that follows a thousand teenage boys as they participate in a week-long political simulation program in Texas. The boys are divided into two parties, the Federalists and the Nationalists, and must create their own government from scratch. They campaign, debate, and strategize to win elections and pass legislation.
The film focuses on four boys in particular, Steven, Ben, Robert, and Rene, as they navigate the challenges of the program. Steven is a charismatic and ambitious young man who quickly rises to power within the Federalist party. Ben is a thoughtful and principled Nationalist who struggles to find his place in the competitive environment. Robert is a conservative and confident Nationalist who faces backlash for his controversial views. Rene is a progressive and passionate Federalist who fights for his beliefs despite opposition.
As the week progresses, tensions rise and alliances are tested. The boys must confront issues of leadership, compromise, and the nature of democracy. Boys State offers a fascinating look at the complexities of American politics and the future of our democracy through the eyes of these young men.
