After fighting in the Crusades for three years, Dante returns to his family home to be reunited with his beloved Beatrice and her father. Dante sees a horseman following him, but out of nowhere, the man disappears without a trace. When he gets home, he sees the servants slaughtered, his father murdered, and Beatrice on the verge of death. When her soul goes to heaven, Lucifer takes Beatrice to hell, telling her that Dante has betrayed her. Dante meets Virgil, who guides him to hell, and the poet explains that Beatrice had a bet with Lucifer that Dante would be faithful to him during the holy war. In return, Lucifer would protect Dante and bring him home safely. Arriving in Hell, Dante learns that he needs to cross nine circles to reach Lucifer and in his painful journey, he finds out who sentenced his family to suffer in Hell.
