Synopsis

The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird's directorial debut is a funny, charming and wince-inducingly accurate adaptation of Joff Winterhart's graphic novel, with a soundtrack by Belle & Sebastian.

Days of the Bagnold Summer (2019) sweetly draws you into the wobbly relationship between well-intentioned single librarian Sue Bagnold and her black-clad teenage son Daniel, who'd rather listen to Metallica than his mother.

Daniel was meant to spend the summer in Florida visiting his dad, but is now stuck with Mum following the trip's cancellation. The film boasts supporting turns by Rob Brydon and Alice Lowe, but belongs to its two leads.

Long-suffering Sue is sympathetically portrayed by Monica Dolan, with Earl Cave's Daniel a suitably lank-haired, pale-skinned picture of adolescent metal-head angst.

Thomas Wright
4/10

I found the use of Belle & Sebastian's music to be repetitive and overwhelming at times, overshadowing the dialogue and emotional moments in the film. It seemed like a lazy choice to rely heavily on the band's music without exploring other options that could have added more depth and complexity to the storytelling.

The music selection in the film effectively captures the awkward and relatable dynamics between Sue and Daniel, adding depth to their complex relationship and character development.

Overall, the soundtrack of Days of the Bagnold Summer elevates the storytelling and emotional impact of the film, making it a standout feature of this heartfelt and authentic adaptation.

The soundtrack for Days of the Bagnold Summer by Belle & Sebastian felt out of place and uninspired. The music didn't enhance the emotional depth of the film, but instead felt like a generic background noise that failed to capture the essence of the characters' struggles and relationships.

David Hall
5/10

Belle & Sebastian's songs create a nostalgic and melancholic atmosphere that resonates with the coming-of-age theme of the movie, making it a poignant and memorable experience for the audience.

James Hill

The soundtrack of Days of the Bagnold Summer perfectly complements the film's tone, enhancing its funny and charming moments with Belle & Sebastian's signature indie-pop sound.
