Synopsis

FBI Agent Natalia Chapin (Anika Noni Rose) and Justice Department attorney Jess Kinney (Shawn Hatosy) lead a Justice Department Civil Rights Division investigation into the brutal murder of an African-American business leader in a small town. from ohio. Chapin, Kinney, and their boss Ochs Rainey (Tim Blake Nelson) face divisions in the city and their police force, all sparked by Tom Berryman, a mysterious ex-radical from the '70s hell-bent on inciting a race war. A demonstration led by the murder victim's son (Aml Ameen) culminates in a police riot. As Chapin and Kinney unravel the mystery behind the murder, the threat against the town intensifies, much to the chagrin of Rainey's boss, United States Attorney General Georgina Howe (Phylicia Rashad). Although Chapin and Kinney unmask Berryman as the killer and thwart his plan to murder the victim's son during a service at a local church, Berryman escapes.
