Synopsis

Free State of Jones is a historical war film set during the American Civil War. The movie follows the story of Newton Knight, a Confederate army deserter who leads a rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi.

Newton Knight forms an alliance with escaped slaves and poor farmers to fight against the oppressive Confederate government. Together, they establish the Free State of Jones, a mixed-race community that challenges the racial and social norms of the time.

As the Civil War rages on, Newton Knight and his followers face persecution and violence from both the Confederate and Union armies. Despite the odds against them, they continue to fight for their freedom and equality.

The film explores themes of race, class, and power dynamics during a tumultuous period in American history. It highlights the courage and resilience of those who dared to defy the status quo and fight for a better future.
