"Sherman's March" is a documentary film that follows filmmaker Ross McElwee as he embarks on a journey to retrace General William Tecumseh Sherman's infamous march through the South during the American Civil War. McElwee's original plan was to make a film about the effects of nuclear war on the Southern landscape, but as he travels through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, he becomes more focused on his personal relationships and romantic pursuits. The film captures McElwee's encounters with a variety of characters, including former lovers, family members, and strangers, as he reflects on the nature of love, war, and memory.
