Synopsis

The Heart of the Matter is a TV serialisation of Graham Greene's novel, featuring Major Scobie, a British official in a West African colony during WWII.

Both Major Scobie and his wife are devout Catholics, but they are thoroughly unhappy in their marriage.

Major Scobie's life takes a dark turn when he starts an affair with a young girl and then breaks the law to hide it.

Consumed by guilt, Major Scobie is portrayed by Jack Hedley in this international cast.

Despite being one of Channel 4's early major drama acquisitions, the reviews were mixed.

La Stampa was less than flattering, stating that "It would be easy to understand how a rather novice English producer could simply think: since Greene is our most lively novelist, and since THE HEART OF THE MATTER is one of his most important novels, let's make a beautiful film. But it is in such a temptation there remains the real core of his problem."
