Jake is a writer. He is married to Maggie, but his marriage is in trouble. He can't stop thinking about other women in his life, characters with whom he invents conversations. He constantly talks to: his late wife Julie, his daughter Molly, his sister Karen, and his psychiatrist Edith. All he does is have imaginary conversations with real people who are currently outside of his life. Maggie can't stand that her mind wanders all the time and she decides to separate for six months and at the end of the six months they will decide whether or not to stay together. Jake has some girlfriends, but he spends the six months, while he's waiting for Maggie, only talking to these imaginary people and sometimes real people.
