Julie Walking Home is a story about a Polish-Canadian woman named Julie who plans to leave her partner Henry after catching him cheating on her. However, her plans are put on hold when her adolescent twins, Nicholas and Nicole, are faced with a difficult situation.
After Nicholas is diagnosed with cancer, Julie decides to stay with Henry to focus on getting Nicholas well. But things take a turn for the worse when Nicholas proves to be allergic to the chemotherapy.
This situation leads to disagreements in beliefs, particularly between Julie's spiritualistic nature and scientist Henry's belief in science and western medicine. There are also conflicts among Julie's devout Catholic father, non-devout Jewish Henry, and Julie herself, who does not believe in formal religion.
At her wit's end, Julie decides to take the advice of her father's Polish mail-order bride Bogusia, despite her lack of trust in her. Bogusia mentions a faith healer in Poland named Alexy, who helped her with a tumor. Julie, feeling she has no choice for Nicholas' sake, decides to visit Alexy.
Julie and Nicholas' encounters with Alexy bring a profound change to their lives, challenging their beliefs and ultimately leading to a new understanding of themselves and each other.
