Synopsis

Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862. The novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, focusing on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his quest for redemption.

Set in early 19th-century France, Les Misérables explores themes of justice, love, and revolution. Valjean, after serving 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, is released on parole but struggles to find work and acceptance due to his criminal past.

He is taken in by a kind bishop who shows him mercy, prompting Valjean to turn his life around and live as an honest man. However, he is relentlessly pursued by the police inspector Javert, who is determined to bring him back to prison.

As Valjean tries to evade capture and build a new life, he becomes entangled in the lives of other characters, including the young orphan Cosette and the revolutionary student Marius. The novel culminates in the June Rebellion of 1832, where the characters' fates intertwine in a dramatic and tragic climax.

Les Misérables is a powerful and moving story that explores the complexities of human nature and the pursuit of justice and redemption. It has been adapted into numerous films, stage musicals, and other media, cementing its status as a classic of world literature.
