Lush Life is a story about Al Gorky, a womanizing professional saxophonist who enjoys playing at various gigs such as recording sessions, Broadway shows, weddings, museums, and cruises. He refers to himself as a professional "New York Sideman".
His long-time best friend, Buddy Chester, is a trumpeter who has been featured in jazz articles and has a musical discography. The two friends bask in the spotlight and enjoy wild nights after their jazz club performances.
However, their lives take a turn when it is revealed that Buddy is suffering from constant migraine headaches caused by a brain tumor that will eventually lead to him losing his sight and sound, with no cure in sight. In a bid to bid farewell to his musical career, Buddy enlists Al to throw him a grand send-off party in New York City, featuring all their friends and fellow musicians.
The party is meant to be a musical celebration of Buddy's life and achievements, but Buddy has other ideas as thoughts of suicide linger. As the party takes shape towards a happy conclusion, there is also a search for a trumpet owned by the great jazz musician Clifford Brown, which would make Buddy's goodbye party even more memorable.
