Synopsis

Mockumentary look at Playgirl Magazine centerfold and 1992 Man of the Year, Dirk Shafer, who kept it a secret from the magazine that he is gay.

Most of the film is a fictionalized retelling of Dirk's decision to send a photograph to Playgirl, his selection as a centerfold and then Man of the Year, his many TV interviews, his friend Vivian Paxton posing as his beard, and the pressures from his live-in lover to come out of the closet.

Interspersed with this chronological narrative are a black and white look at an evening Dirk spends with Angela Lucassey, a woman from Reno who wins Playgirl's national contest to have a date with Dirk, and an interview with a stripper who tracks Dirk down.

Mary Hall
6/10

The soundtrack of Man of the Year effectively captures the emotional journey of Dirk Shafer as he navigates the complexities of his public image while concealing his true sexual orientation. The use of somber piano melodies and melancholic strings during Dirk's moments of introspection adds depth to his internal struggle, creating a sense of empathy for his character.

Carol Allen
8/10

The original score in Man of the Year is both evocative and moving, perfectly complementing the on-screen drama and adding an additional layer of emotional depth to the story. The music helps to convey the inner turmoil and conflicts experienced by Dirk, making his journey even more compelling.

Emily Hill
5/10

On the other hand, some of the musical choices in the film feel a bit cliché and predictable, relying too heavily on generic 90s pop rock tracks to convey the more dramatic moments. While these songs may be catchy, they lack the nuance and subtlety needed to elevate the emotional impact of certain scenes, ultimately falling flat in comparison to the more introspective pieces.

Thomas Brown
8/10

The choice of music in the film creates a nostalgic and authentic atmosphere, transporting the audience back to the early 90s and immersing them in Dirk's world. The sound design effectively evokes the era and enhances the overall viewing experience.

Michael Martinez
