Margaret's Museum is set in the 1940's. Margaret MacNeil lives in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, a coal mining country. The coal pits have had a profound impact on her life and her family. Her father and older brother died in the pits, and her grandfather suffers from a respiratory illness due to his years working in the mines.
The sound of a coal pit's emergency whistle is dreaded by those in the area, as it signifies a serious injury or death. Because of this, Margaret refuses to date any miners and prefers to be alone. However, her fifteen-year-old brother, Jimmy MacNeil, is eager to start dating and is interested in a girl who may pose a problem in their class-divided society.
Neil Currie, a bagpipe-playing Scotsman who used to work in the mines but got fired on purpose, enters Margaret's life. Despite her mother's objections, Margaret and Neil get married. Neil's ability to provide for Margaret is questioned by her mother, especially after he loses his job and decides to return to the mines.
Despite the challenges they face, Margaret is inspired by her life with Neil and decides to open a unique museum in honor of all the miners, including Neil. The museum serves as a tribute to the miners and highlights the impact of the mines on Margaret's life.
