Tezaab is a story about Mahesh Deshmukh, who from a very early age has dreams of serving his country. His dreams are further fueled when his parents are killed by a gang of robbers while working at a bank.
He joins the Indian armed forces and excels in his service to the country. During his college days, he meets Mohini, who falls in love with him. Despite initial doubts, Mahesh also falls in love with her and convinces her of his feelings.
Mohini's father, Shyamlal, is an alcoholic who wants her to become a dancer and prostitute to support his drinking habit. Mahesh is appalled by this and tries to intervene, leading to a conflict with Shyamlal. Shyamlal enlists the help of gangster Lotiya Pathan to frame Mahesh, resulting in his arrest and exile from Bombay for a year.
This experience transforms Mahesh from a simple-minded lad with dreams for his country into the city's most feared gangster, Munna, driven by a desire for revenge.
