Synopsis

The First World War

The First World War, also known as World War I, was a global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918. It was one of the deadliest wars in history, with an estimated 10 million military personnel and 7 million civilians losing their lives.

The war began in Europe, but quickly spread to other parts of the world as countries formed alliances and entered the conflict. The main powers involved in the war were the Allies, which included countries such as France, Russia, and the United Kingdom, and the Central Powers, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire.

Some of the key events of the war included the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, which sparked the conflict, the Battle of the Somme, which resulted in over 1 million casualties, and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended the war.

The First World War had a profound impact on the world, leading to the collapse of empires, the redrawing of national borders, and the rise of new ideologies such as communism and fascism. It also set the stage for the Second World War, which would follow just two decades later.
