The year is 1630. A young woman Eli Laupstad comes to a small mountain village. She witnesses a woman being hunted and captured. Aslak Gimra, which is responsible for the horses at the biggest farm, informs Eli that the woman was suspected of witchcraft. Eli seeks out Ingeborg Eriksdotter Jaatun, head of the largest farm in her man's absence. She is permitted to work to weave and dye yarn and fabric. She has her own equipment with her. Eli is descended from the village. Her ancestors lived on the farm Laupstad. Now she wants to settle down there.
