Synopsis

Underground is set in Berlin, Nazi Germany, where Eric Franken (Philip Dorn) works with the German underground to broadcast anti-Nazi information over the radio to the German people.

When his brother Kurt (Jeffery Lynn) returns home after losing an arm in battle, Eric must double his efforts to hide his activities.

On the night of Kurt's return, the family is visited by an old friend, Gustav Müller, who has been saddened by the death of his son in the war.

Kurt, convinced of the nobility of the German cause, accuses the grieving man of being unpatriotic.

Eric has planned a broadcast for that evening and, intending to sneak out of the house, leaves for his room.

Kurt follows him and notices a phone number for Sylvia Helmuth (Kaaren Verne), another member of the underground, teasing Eric about his "girl friend."

Warned by Fraulein Gessner (Mona Maris), an operative inside Gestapo headquarters, the group is able to escape but is forced to burn the truck and destroy the radio equipment.

The Gestapo orders the release of their former associate, Hoffman (Wolfgang Zilzer), from a concentration camp to trap the members of the group.

Meanwhile, Kurt is attracted to Sylvia and agrees to report on her activities for the Gestapo.

Eventually, Kurt realizes Sylvia is a member of the underground and informs the Gestapo, leading to Eric's arrest.

A distraught Kurt decides to join the underground and allow Eric to die believing that he betrayed him.

On the day of the execution, Kurt broadcasts illegally over speakers at the execution site to let Eric know that he will continue his work.

The musical score of Underground often feels out of place and disrupts the immersion in the storyline. Instead of enhancing the dramatic tension or highlighting key moments, the soundtrack distracts from the narrative, creating a disjointed viewing experience.

The music in Underground skillfully enhances the emotional depth of the characters, particularly during pivotal moments such as Eric's arrest and Kurt's decision to join the underground. The melancholic melodies and stirring orchestral arrangements underscore the complex relationships and moral dilemmas faced by the characters.
