Untying the Knot tells the powerful story of Rumana Monzur, a Bangladeshi-Canadian woman who was viciously assaulted by her husband in Bangladesh, leaving her permanently blind. Refusing to let this traumatic incident ruin her life, Rumana perseveres and continues to pursue her life's dreams. Tracing her journey from Dhaka, Bangladesh to Vancouver, Canada, the film reveals Rumana's incredible resolve as she overcomes unthinkable hardship to achieve her goal of becoming a lawyer. Interwoven with Rumana's story are the unfolding journeys of three women in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital city, whose relationships mirror Rumana's own abusive marriage. Exposing the ways in which abuse, family pressure and social stigma shape the characters' lives, Untying the Knot is an intimate portrait of how women are surviving, and fighting to change, the social codes that bind them.
