When We Were Kings is a documentary film that takes place in 1974. Muhammad Ali, who is 32 years old, is considered by many to be past his prime. On the other hand, George Foreman is the Heavyweight champion of the world and is ten years younger than Ali.
Promoter Don King sees an opportunity to make a name for himself and offers both fighters five million dollars each to fight each other. When they accept the offer, King must come up with the money. He secures a backer in Mobutu Sese Seko, the dictator of Zaire, and the iconic event known as the "Rumble in the Jungle" is set to take place.
As part of the event, a musical festival featuring some of America's top black performers, such as James Brown and B.B. King, is also planned to entertain the audience.
