Synopsis

White Oleander is a story about Astrid Magnussen, a fifteen-year-old girl living in California. Her mother, Ingrid, is a beautiful poet and artist with borderline personality disorder.

Their lives take a dark turn when Ingrid falls in love with a man named Barry Kolker, only to have her heart broken and her life ruined. In a fit of revenge, Ingrid murders Barry with the deadly poison of her favorite flower, the White Oleander.

Ingrid is sentenced to life in prison, and Astrid is forced to navigate through a series of foster homes. Over nearly a decade, Astrid experiences forbidden love, religion, near-death experiences, drugs, starvation, and the feeling of being loved.

Despite the challenges, Astrid maintains a connection with her mother through letters. Ingrid teaches Astrid the power to survive, while Astrid teaches her mother about love.

On the other hand, while the soundtrack effectively conveys the emotional weight of the story, some tracks feel repetitive and lack diversity in style. The reliance on similar motifs and themes throughout the soundtrack can make certain moments feel predictable and less impactful. Despite this, the overall composition and arrangement of the music still effectively complement the narrative of White Oleander.
