Yerma is a married woman who, after two years of trying to get pregnant, sees how all her friends have children except her, feeling frustrated and sad. Although she appreciates her husband, she does not enjoy having sex with him, but accepts him in her attempt to become pregnant. However, she does feel a certain attraction to her friend Victor, with whom she is linked by the rumors, even though she would not be unfaithful to her husband.
Faced with this situation, her husband invites his sisters to live with them so that they can keep an eye on Yerma while he is not at home and thus prevent further rumors that could damage his honor.
Yerma, still very determined to start a family, decides to visit Dolores, a conjurer who could help her conceive, in the middle of the night. Yerma confesses that she prefers to suffer for a child that has to suffer for the child she does not have. Dolores decides to send her a series of prayers, however, before she can return home, she is discovered by her husband and sisters, which leads to a big discussion between her and her husband.
Increasingly out of sorts, she decided to go to the pilgrimage to pray to the saints to have a child. There he meets an old woman he had talked to before and offers to start a new life with her and her son in an attempt to make her happy, but he rejects her.
Finally, she talks to her husband about her desire to be a mother and discovers that her husband does not want to start a family even though it is what she most desires and possessed by despair she kills her husband with her own hands.
