Sinopsis

Glendale, California, 1931: Mildred Pierce, una joven madre con talento para la repostería, se convierte en una "viuda de hierba" después de echar a su esposo, Bert, de la casa.

Forzada a buscar trabajo para mantener a sus dos hijas pequeñas, Veda de 11 años y Ray de siete, Mildred visita una agencia de empleo, solo para encontrarse con oportunidades laborales que considera por debajo de ella.

En medio de su búsqueda de empleo, recibe consejos de citas de su amiga y vecina, Lucy Gessler, y comienza una inesperada aventura con un ex socio comercial de su esposo, Wally Burgan.

Cuando Mildred recibe una llamada de la agencia sobre una vacante como ama de llaves de una adinerada socialité, acepta a regañadientes reunirse con ella.

Después de cortar la entrevista ácida, Mildred busca refugio en un café local, el Café Cristofor, donde el destino, y una camarera llamada Ida, jugarán un papel en la formación de su futuro.
