Sinopse

Glendale, California, 1931: Mildred Pierce, uma jovem mãe com talento para cozinhar, é deixada viúva após expulsar seu marido, Bert, de casa. Forçada a procurar trabalho para sustentar a si mesma e suas duas filhas pequenas, Veda, de 11 anos, e Ray, de sete anos, Mildred visita uma agência de empregos, apenas para encontrar oportunidades de trabalho que ela considera abaixo de sua capacidade.

Em meio à sua busca por emprego, ela recebe conselhos amorosos de sua amiga e vizinha, Lucy Gessler, e começa um caso inesperado com um ex-sócio de negócios de seu marido, Wally Burgan. Quando Mildred recebe uma ligação da agência sobre uma vaga como governanta de uma socialite rica, ela concorda relutantemente em se encontrar com ela.

Depois de interromper a entrevista ácida, Mildred busca refúgio em um café local, o Cristofor's Café, onde o destino, e uma garçonete chamada Ida, desempenharão um papel na formação de seu futuro.
