Complot de famille

Julia Rainbird, riche et âgée, souhaite léguer sa vaste fortune à son unique héritier présumé vivant, son neveu illégitime, qui a été donné en adoption bébé et dont elle ignore l'identité et le lieu de résidence. Au lieu de faire appel à un détective privé pour le localiser, un détective qui utiliserait des moyens publics pour faire son travail, Julia fait plutôt appel aux services plus discrets de sa voyante, Madame Blanche, pour retrouver son neveu, moyennant un paiement de 10 000 dollars à la livraison.

Ce que Julia ignore, c'est que Madame Blanche - en réalité Blanche Tyler - est une charlatane, qui utilise des informations de base sur ses cibles souvent découvertes par son petit ami acteur/taxi, George Lumley, pour perpétrer l'escroquerie. Blanche et George considèrent ces 10 000 dollars comme leur ticket pour le repas, malgré des indices minces sur l'identité et le lieu de résidence du neveu. Leurs premiers indices indiquent que le neveu pourrait en fait être mort... ou peut-être pas.

En réalité, le neveu est Arthur Adamson, un bijoutier, qui, avec sa complice secrète/petite amie Fran, a amassé sa propre petite fortune grâce au vol de pierres précieuses, principalement en kidnappant les propriétaires de pierres précieuses, lesdites pierres précieuses étant la rançon payée. Arthur a grandi sous le nom d'Edward Shoebridge, le fils adoptif d'amis du chauffeur des Rainbird. Avec un autre complice, Edward a tué ses parents dans un incendie il y a vingt-cinq ans, et a simulé sa propre mort dans le processus, bien qu'il n'ait jamais été déclaré légalement mort puisqu'il n'y avait pas de preuve concluante de cela. Il a assumé son identité actuelle après l'incendie.

Lorsqu'Arthur apprend que ces étrangers, George et Blanche, essaient de localiser Edward Shoebridge sans en connaître la raison, Arthur et Fran pensent que c'est à cause de leur dernier kidnapping, et décident donc de faire tout ce qui est nécessaire, y compris le meurtre, pour empêcher George et Blanche de trouver "Eddie".

Deuxièmement, certaines pistes sonores utilisées dans le film m'ont semblé mal accordées avec l'atmosphère et l'action à l'écran. Par moments, la musique semblait décalée par rapport à l'intensité des scènes, ce qui a créé une certaine discordance et a nui à mon expérience cinématographique. J'aurais préféré une meilleure synchronisation entre la musique et les événements à l'écran pour renforcer l'impact émotionnel du film.
