Intriga em Família

Julia Rainbird, uma idosa e rica, deseja deixar sua vasta fortuna para seu único herdeiro presumido vivo, seu sobrinho ilegítimo, que foi dado como bebê e cujo paradeiro e identidade ela desconhece. Em vez de recorrer a um investigador particular para localizá-lo, um detetive que usaria meios públicos para fazer seu trabalho, Julia contrata os serviços mais discretos de sua vidente, Madame Blanche, para localizar seu sobrinho, com um pagamento de $10.000 após a entrega.

O que Julia não sabe é que Madame Blanche - na verdade Blanche Tyler - é uma charlatã, que usa informações básicas de seus alvos frequentemente descobertas por seu namorado ator/motorista de táxi, George Lumley, para perpetrar o golpe. Blanche e George veem esses $10.000 como sua garantia de sobrevivência, apesar de terem apenas pistas escassas sobre a identidade e o paradeiro do sobrinho. Suas primeiras pistas indicam que o sobrinho pode na verdade estar morto... ou talvez não.

Na realidade, o sobrinho é Arthur Adamson, um joalheiro, que, juntamente com sua associada/namorada secreta Fran, acumulou sua própria pequena fortuna através do roubo de gemas, principalmente através do sequestro dos proprietários das gemas, com as gemas sendo o resgate pago. Arthur cresceu como Edward Shoebridge, o filho adotivo de amigos do motorista dos Rainbird. Juntamente com outro associado, Edward matou seus pais em um incêndio há vinte e cinco anos, e fingiu sua própria morte no processo, embora nunca tenha sido declarado legalmente morto, pois não havia evidências conclusivas disso. Ele assumiu sua identidade atual após o incêndio.

Quando Arthur descobre que esses estranhos, George e Blanche, estão tentando localizar Edward Shoebridge sem saber o motivo, Arthur e Fran acreditam que é por causa de seu último sequestro, e decidem que precisam fazer o que for necessário, incluindo assassinato, para impedir que George e Blanche encontrem "Eddie".
