Sinopse
Em New Salem, a estudante de classe alta e aspirante a escritora Aubrey Fleming acabou de abandonar as aulas de piano para se dedicar à escrita. Quando o corpo mutilado de sua colega de escola desaparecida, Jennifer Toland, é encontrado, os moradores lamentam a estudante enquanto a polícia persegue o assassino.
Depois de um jogo de futebol, Aubrey é sequestrada e depois mutilada pelo serial killer. Algumas semanas depois, Aubrey é encontrada inconsciente em uma estrada solitária e levada ao hospital com a mão e o pé cortados no mesmo modus operandi em que Jennifer foi mutilada.
Quando ela acorda, ela diz que é a stripper Dakota Moss e que sua mãe viciada teve uma overdose e morreu. Quando o FBI descobre que Dakota é um personagem das histórias de Aubrey, eles concluem que a garota precisa de tratamento psiquiátrico e proteção. Mas Dakota insiste que não é Aubrey.
