Em 1945, os fuzileiros navais atacam doze mil japoneses protegendo os vinte quilômetros quadrados da sagrada ilha de Iwo Jima em uma batalha muito violenta. Quando eles alcançam o Monte Suribachi e cinco fuzileiros navais e um marinheiro da Marinha levantam sua bandeira no topo, a imagem se torna um símbolo em uma América pós-Grande Depressão.
O governo traz os três sobreviventes para a América para arrecadar fundos para a guerra, trazendo esperança para as pessoas desoladas e tornando os três homens heróis da guerra. No entanto, o trio traumatizado tem dificuldade em lidar com a imagem construída por seus superiores, compartilhando o heroísmo com seus companheiros.
