Synopsis

In the aftermath of In the Mood for Love (2000), after losing Su Li-zhen, the love of his life, the journalist and author, Chow Mo-wan, returns to Hong Kong to write a book.

Obsessed with finishing his new science fiction novel, Chow begins a series of romantic relationships with four different women; however, the more he tries to understand and forget, the more he finds himself haunted by his past.

In his novel, a train sets off for a remote, mysterious destination in 2046, where passengers hope to reclaim their lost memories.

Now, a maelstrom of beautiful and sad feelings, secret longings, and wild passions govern Chow's life, who's been trying to relive a life-altering experience ever since his doomed affair with Su: an emotionally intense relationship that has defined Chow's life and condemned his future romances.

On the other hand, while the soundtrack of 2046 is undeniably evocative and atmospheric, at times, it can feel a bit repetitive and overwhelming. The constant use of similar motifs and musical cues, while effective in setting the mood, can also become monotonous and distract from the storytelling. A greater variety in the musical styles and compositions could have added more depth and nuance to the overall soundtrack, making it even more impactful in conveying the film's themes.

Jennifer Lewis

The soundtrack of 2046 lacked emotional depth and failed to capture the complex and melancholic tone of the story. I felt disconnected from the characters and their struggles due to the music feeling generic and uninspired.

Charles Miller

The musical choices in 2046 often felt jarring and out of place, disrupting the flow of the narrative rather than enhancing it. The sudden shifts in tone and style made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the film's world, detracting from the overall viewing experience.

Despite the film's rich and layered storytelling, the soundtrack of 2046 felt repetitive and monotonous, failing to evolve along with the characters and their emotional journeys. The lack of variation in the music left me feeling bored and disengaged, diminishing the impact of pivotal moments in the plot.
