John Rabe was a German businessman who lived in Nanjing, China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. As the Japanese army invaded the city in 1937, Rabe decided to stay and help protect the Chinese civilians.
Despite being a member of the Nazi party, Rabe used his influence to establish a safety zone in Nanjing where thousands of Chinese refugees could seek shelter.
He also documented the atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers, providing evidence of the massacre that would later be known as the Nanjing Massacre.
Rabe's actions saved the lives of thousands of Chinese civilians and his efforts were recognized by the Chinese government after the war.
The film "John Rabe" tells the story of this unlikely hero and his courageous actions during one of the darkest periods of Chinese history.
