Elvira: Mistress of the Dark is a story about a horror hostess named Elvira who quits her job after a chauvinist millionaire buys the television network where she works. She plans to produce her own show in Las Vegas, but the producers demand $50,000 which she doesn't have.
Unexpectedly, Elvira receives a telegram informing her of her great-aunt Morgana's death and an inheritance she is set to receive. She travels to Fallwell, Massachusetts, where her convertible breaks down and she inherits an old mansion, a recipe book, and a poodle from her great-aunt.
Elvira faces challenges in the conservative town of Fallwell due to her clothes and behavior, but she finds support from cinema owner Bob Redding and local teenagers. When she tries to impress Bob with a dinner using Morgana's recipe book, she discovers it is actually a spell book passed down from her mother Divana.
Elvira learns that her great-uncle Vincent Talbot, a warlock, wants the spell book to take over the world and destroy her. When she refuses to sell it to him, Vincent convinces the council that she is a witch who must be burned at the stake. How will Elvira stop the evil warlock Vincent and save herself?
