Synopsis

Genesis is a science fiction novel written by Octavia E. Butler. The story follows the protagonist, Lilith Iyapo, who wakes up centuries after a nuclear war to find herself in the care of an alien race known as the Oankali.

The Oankali are genetic engineers who offer Lilith a chance to help them repopulate Earth, but their methods and intentions are mysterious and unsettling. As Lilith navigates her new reality and forms complex relationships with the Oankali, she must grapple with questions of identity, humanity, and survival.

Through Genesis, Butler explores themes of power, consent, and the consequences of human actions. The novel challenges readers to consider the implications of genetic manipulation and the boundaries of what it means to be human.
