Synopsis

In the second part of this seven-part series, Oliver Tambo is sent abroad to lead the ANC after it was banned in South Africa in 1960. This episode depicts Tambo's efforts to bring the world's attention to the injustice of apartheid. He insists that the apartheid regime can be brought to the negotiating table if governments sanction and isolate South Africa, which is economically and culturally dependent on its ties to the Western world. They are the main allies, over all the nations of Africa and the governments of Sweden, Norway and the Soviet Union. ANC efforts are boosted in South Africa by the Soweto uprising and the assassination of Steve Biko. South Africa becomes more than a country; it is a cause, a global emblem of injustice. A great victory is won: a mandatory United Nations arms embargo, the first in history. But no one will financially sanction South Africa and by the time the story ends, a bloodbath seems inevitable.
