The L'Île (French for 'the island') miniseries is based on the book by Robert Merle, which is a fictional story inspired by the 1789 mutiny of the HMAV "Bounty". An 18th-century British merchant ship, the "Blossom," is headed for Tahiti when a tyrannical Captain Blunt beats up a sailor, a relative of First Mate Mason (Cremer). Seeking revenge, Mason kills Blunt with a single shot in full view of the crew. Before and his stay in Tahiti, it becomes clear to Mason that upon his return to England he would be court-martialed and executed for mutiny. Instead, he opts to sail the ship with a handful of Polynesian sailors and natives to an unknown island to establish a settlement. Since there are more men than women, British sailors ensure that each of them has a native wife, while Polynesian men are left with few women to share among many men.
