Synopsis

Mara, a short film by Mike Figgis, is a dramatization of Mara-Marignan from Henry Miller's Quiet Days in Clichy. The 20 minute film was originally shot and broadcast as part of HBO's anthology film Women and Men 2.

From the time of production, Figgis distanced himself from the film complaining that although he had been guaranteed final cut, the producers and HBO had re-cut the film prior to broadcast and removed the score he had specifically composed for his film.

In 2015, Figgis released a new version of Mara, calling it his version of what the film "might have been".

It's rare to hear about a director's strong attachment to a film score, but Figgis' reaction to the changes made to Mara shows just how important music can be in shaping the overall experience.

The soundtrack of Mara truly captures the essence of the film's emotional depth and intensity. The music perfectly complements the narrative, enhancing every scene and drawing the audience deeper into the story.

The behind-the-scenes drama surrounding the score of Mara adds an intriguing layer to the film's history. It's a reminder of the complexities of the filmmaking process.

The decision to remove Figgis' original score and replace it with a different one for the broadcast version of the film was a major misstep. The new score failed to capture the essence of the narrative and left the audience feeling disconnected from the emotional core of the story.

Figgis' decision to release a new version of Mara in 2015 speaks volumes about his dedication to his craft. It's interesting to think about what the film could have been with his original score intact.

I found the soundtrack of Mara to be disjointed and out of sync with the mood and atmosphere of the film. The music seemed out of place and did not enhance the viewing experience as it should have.

Deborah Lopez
1/10

The lack of communication between Mike Figgis and the producers regarding the score led to a significant disconnect between the director's vision and the final product. This resulted in a soundtrack that felt forced and did not resonate with the story being portrayed on screen.

Timothy Scott
5/10

I can only imagine the impact that a well-crafted score could have had on a short film like Mara. It's disappointing to hear about the interference with Figgis' artistic vision.

John Evans

The original score composed by Mike Figgis for Mara must have been truly exceptional if he was so disappointed with its removal. It's a shame that the final cut didn't reflect his vision.

Michael Moore

Despite the challenges faced by Figgis with the producers and HBO, the score he crafted for Mara remains a testament to his talent and creative vision, adding a layer of depth and complexity to the film that resonated with me long after the credits rolled.
