"Not My Day" tells the story of Till Reiners, a mid-30s bank teller at Osthofen Mutual Bank for almost 15 years. His marriage to purse designer Miriam is happy but in danger of becoming routine. Till's life is shaken up when a bank robber, Nappo, takes him hostage after a failed robbery. Nappo is a former con who Till turned down for a loan. As they flee together, Till starts enjoying the gangster life and even helps Nappo with a lucrative deal using his banking skills.
However, things take a turn when Till misunderstands a phone call with his wife, thinking she doesn't care for him. As Till and Nappo head to Holland, the police start treating Till as a suspect in the bank robbery. Miriam, refusing to believe her husband's involvement, goes to Amsterdam to find him. She ends up in danger due to Till's shady deal, leading to a dramatic showdown where Till risks everything to rescue his wife and realizes his old life wasn't so bad after all.
