For Greater Glory

Synopsis

Retired general Enrique Gorostieta is now an established businessman whose devout wife Tulita, is very concerned about about the future of their daughters' upbringing in 1920s Mexico, where there's a violent and relentless crackdown on the Catholic faithful.

When he is approached by a representative of the Catholic Resistance (Los Cristeros), for help, he is initially dismissive of the disorganized rebels saying they only have a belief, not men, or equipment, and even if he said yes, they couldn't afford him.

As the man is about to leave his office, he picks up a bar of soap from his desk. He puts it to his nose and sniffs it appraisingly and says: "Is Mexico's greatest general content to live out his days producing pink soap? The general's answer will change the face of Mexico's history forever."

Additionally, the choice of instruments and musical themes in the soundtrack often feels disconnected from the setting of 1920s Mexico and the struggles of the Catholic Resistance. The music does not effectively transport the viewer to the time and place of the story, failing to create a sense of immersion and authenticity in the film's historical context.
