Synopsis

In this inspired, genre-twisting new film, Oscar®-nominated writer/director Sarah Polley discovers that the truth depends on who's telling it.

Polley is both filmmaker and detective as she investigates the secrets kept by a family of storytellers.

She playfully interviews and interrogates a cast of characters of varying reliability, eliciting refreshingly candid, yet mostly contradictory, answers to the same questions.

As each relates their version of the family mythology, present-day recollections shift into nostalgia-tinged glimpses of their mother, who departed too soon, leaving a trail of unanswered questions.

Polley unravels the paradoxes to reveal the essence of family: always complicated, warmly messy and fiercely loving.

Stories We Tell explores the elusive nature of truth and memory, but at its core is a deeply personal film about how our narratives shape and define us as individuals and families, all interconnecting to paint a profound, funny and poignant picture of the larger human story.

Each track is carefully crafted to reflect the shifting perspectives and memories explored in the film, creating a rich tapestry of sound that mirrors the layered storytelling.

Andrew Young

I was disappointed with the repetitive nature of the musical themes throughout the movie. The lack of variety in the soundtrack made it difficult for me to stay engaged with the storytelling, as the music failed to create the necessary atmosphere to support the unfolding drama.

Andrew Johnson

The soundtrack's ability to evoke a range of emotions, from joy to sorrow to introspection, is a testament to its power and artistry.

Mark Johnson

On the other hand, some tracks in the soundtrack felt a bit repetitive and didn't add much value to the overall viewing experience. While the music helped set the tone for certain scenes, it sometimes felt like it was trying too hard to evoke a specific emotion, which came off as slightly forced.

The soundtrack seamlessly weaves together different musical genres and styles, mirroring the genre-twisting nature of the film itself.

The soundtrack of Stories We Tell did not enhance the emotional impact of the film for me. I found the music to be uninspired and lacking in depth, failing to effectively capture the complexity of the narrative.

In my opinion, the soundtrack of Stories We Tell missed the mark in terms of enhancing the overall viewing experience. The music felt disconnected from the emotional core of the film, failing to resonate with me on a deeper level and leaving me feeling underwhelmed by its contribution to the storytelling.

The hauntingly beautiful compositions linger in the mind long after the film has ended, evoking a sense of nostalgia and introspection.
