Thanga Magan is a story about Arun (Rajinikanth), the haughty and belligerent son of rich parents Chidambaram (V.K Ramasamy) and Annapoorani (Manorama). Arun constantly clashes with a pretty but combative hotel dancer, Chitra (Poornima Jayaram), and they eventually fall in love.
One night, a hit-man named Kali, sent by Arun's rivals, tries to murder Arun in his house. Chidambaram recognizes Kali and lets him escape, leading Arun to confront his father for the truth.
Chidambaram reveals that Arun is not his real son and that years ago, he and Kali were supposed to kill Arun and his mother on his real father's orders. However, Chidambaram decided to adopt and raise Arun as his own.
In a surprising twist, Arun discovers that his real mother is Laxmi, an abandoned woman living in Chitra's house. Chidambaram's revelations about Laxmi's past raise doubts about her morality.
Laxmi later reveals how she was deceived into lying in court and ordered to be killed by her criminal husband Velliangiri (Thengai Srinivasan) to protect his associate Rajalingam (Jaishankar).
Velliangiri and Rajalingam, who sent Kali to eliminate Arun, now target Laxmi when they discover she is alive. Arun fights to protect his mother and bring his criminal father and Rajalingam to justice in the rest of the story.
