Abandoned by his drugged-out, ex-stripper mother, homeless 15-year-old Joshua Mason comes into the declining Bohemian art community of Carmel, California, where his situation and his extraordinary artist talent come to the attention of others.
Trespassing into the affluent home of Everly Campbell, Joshua finishes a project he finds in a secret studio, only to later learn that Everly is an art forger. Everly, initially angered by the intrusion, quickly changes his tune when Joshua appears to be a godsend.
He manipulates the courts to allow him to take Joshua in, where, offering "the good life," he soon begins training Joshua in the highly profitable ways of forging great art, but Joshua's moral core is ill at ease.
